Bowden Cable was a member of SpecOps-27, the LiteraTecs, working under Victor Analogy and alongside Thursday Next. He was sensible, with no sense of humour, but a good person who helped Thursday on several missions. He appears in all the books except the ones set in BookWorld.

At one point, he had romantic feelings for Thursday, but got over them when she married Landen Parke-Laine.

In First Among Sequels, he ran the undercover SpecOps and the cover carpet shop, Acme Carpets.

In The Woman Who Died a Lot, Phoebe Smalls wanted him to be her deputy in the LiteraTecs. She asked Thursday about it, but she was pretty sure he wouldn't want to.
