The Great Library consts of 52 levels. The upper 26 levels holds all the books, sorted by the author's last name. The 26 basement levels make up the Well of Lost Plots and Text Sea. There are rumours of a 27th sub-basement, which Harris Tweed told to Thursday, but Miss Havisham dismissed as old wives tales.

As there are few authors whose names begin with Q, X or Z, the 17th, 24th and 26th floors all have other uses as well as storing books. The 26th floor is where the Council of Genres is based. The 24th floor is storage. The 17th floor is the Mispeling Vyrus Farst Respons Groop.

The Cheshire Cat is head librarian. According to him, the library contains not just every book that has ever been written, but also every book that ever will be written, and a few more besides. When asked by Thursday Next just how many that was, he replied "I've never counted myself, but certainly more than twelve."[1]

Well of Lost Plots[]

The Well of Lost Plots is where books are come into existence. They stay there unless they get published, in which case they move into the appropriate place in the upper levels.
